Great River Park Hartford, CT
June 25, 2011

UBB and Whole Foods Market Glastonbury staff and volunteers removed almost 1,000 pounds from the Connecticut River in the Great River Park. This was another cleanup where the site looked very clean at first glance. Once we left the river walk and stepped in the woods, we hit the trash jackpot. During the spring and winter months, this low-lying area gets flooded by the Connecticut River, bringing in whatever trash gets washed downstream.

Neshaminy State Park Main Parking Lot Bensalem, PA
June 18, 2011

ECO SWIM BY AQUA GREEN and UBB volunteers removed 615 pounds of trash from the Delaware River on Saturday, June 18th.  Neshaminy is a beautiful 339 acre park and is a popular destination for boating, swimming, hiking and picnicking for thousands of users each year.

We found some usual and not so usual items at this cleanup: 565 plastic bottles, 71 aluminum cans, 36 glass bottles, 4 tires, 2 lawn chairs, a bag of live fish, construction debris including lots of wood, a huge orange construction cylinder and a full canister of liquid petroleum. One of the park rangers informed us that we could return to that same site every week and find the same amount of trash. Some of the trash gets there through littering, but the majority is swept downstream from households during bad storms.

1200 Armistead Way Baltimore , MD
June 11, 2011

UBB partnered with Blue Water Baltimore, municipal workers and local organizations for this cleanup on Saturday, June 11th. This was not our average cleanup! This was our biggest cleanup to date and we removed 6,691 pounds!

During this cleanup, we removed trash from Armistead Run and Herring Run, which eventually empty out into the Chesapeake Bay. Both streams contained a significant amount of trash and they are also popular illegal dumping sites. The area surrounding the streams is home to a landfill that was filled to capacity.

We found quite the collection of odd items during our cleanup including a fridge, a little kids bike, a turtle sandbox (the bottom, not the top), multiple shopping carts, gas tanks, two mattresses (air and regular) and a black Acura MDX (this stolen SUV weighed 4,471 pounds)!

Bartram's Garden Philadelphia, PA
May 31, 2011

United By Blue finished May with a cleanup in our own backyard at  Bartram's Garden. With temperatures around the comfortable 95 degree mark (with a humidity about 1,000%), even a dip in the Schuylkill was tempting...for a few seconds. Our hardworking crew of 22 people removed 162 pounds of trash from the river.

On a beautiful Memorial Day Saturday, over 100 ECO SWIM BY AQUA GREEN employees traded their aprons and grilling tongs for gloves, litter, and trash bags.

This cleanup started at the ECO SWIM Factory in Easton, PA and a caravan of employees crossed over the Delaware to clean up the banks in Phillipsburg, NJ.

This cleanup was a ton of fun and record-breaking. ECO SWIM BY AQUA GREEN employees removed 2,563 pounds of trash from the banks.  Even though we didn't collect a record amount of bags, we collected a ton of trash.

Meeting Point (End of Beach Ave) Cape May , NJ
May 21, 2011

On Saturday, May 21st UBB along with Pete Smith Surf Shop staff removed 106 pounds of trash from Cape May dunes.

Pete Smith's Surf Shop has been supplying surfers and beachgoers with the latest gear since 1983. They currently has two storefronts in Cape May and one in Stone Harbor.

The area we cleaned is home to numerous bird populations including many endangered species. This popular nesting area for shore birds is littered with plastic bags, fishing line, and plastic bits that birds often mistake for food.

Brave New World Point Pleasant Beach, NJ
May 14, 2011

When we first stepped on the boardwalk at Point Pleasant Beach, we weren't expecting to pick up much trash. We discovered lots of plastic bottles, food containers, bottle caps and cigarette butts after closer examination and a trip under the boardwalk (feel free to start singing). In total we removed 267 pounds of trash and 134 recyclables. Our collection of odd items included an old beach umbrella, a poker chip, one sneaker and lots of leftover Easter eggs (we suspect they were very well hidden).

Bartram's Garden
April 9, 2011

UBB removed 1,247 pounds of trash from the Schuylkill River at Bartram's Garden on Saturday, April 9th. UBB would like to thank the wonderful students from Drexel Sierra Club, Temple, Penn Alpha Chi Rho and Penn Environmental Group, La Salle Circle K, Arcadia Biology Club, and City Year Young Heroes for all their help.

We gathered quite the collection of odd items: 10 tires plus a tractor tire (it took 6 guys to remove this 250 pound tire that was stuck in the mud for at least two years), an empty gun case, a computer, a rad car phone (think Zach Morris style), a backpack with the remnants of a forgotten psych study and a rear view mirror.
