What is the Common Sense Guarantee?

At United by Blue, we stand behind our responsibly sourced and durably made goods. We also believe in the use of common sense. This is why we have created the Common Sense Guarantee. If an item suffers from a manufacturing defect, we have you covered. If it is damaged from wear and tear or misuse, that doesn't fall under this guarantee.

So, you might be wondering, how do you know if it is from wear and tear or a manufacturing defect? This is where the common sense comes into play.

What It Covers

A manufacturing defect any damage or defects that arise from failure of workmanship (seams and construction), failure of materials (zippers, buckles, fabrics), or production defects.

Examples:

  • Bags: The zipper on your bag rips in the first few months
  • Ceramics: A mug whose handle breaks off on first use
  • Socks: A sock starts to unravel after only wearing it a few times

If your item suffers from a defect, we promise to replace or refund it when a replacement is not available.

What’s Not Covered

Wear and tear are NOT manufacturing defects and should be obvious by using common sense.

Examples:

  • A 7-year-old backpack that has traveled the world multiple times over and the strap has come loose

  • A pair of socks that have a hole because your dog chewed when you were out traveling the world with your 7-year-old backpack

  • A button comes off your favorite shirt after you wore it to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with your favorite 7-year-old backpack

Not Sure If It's Covered?

If you have a circumstance that falls outside of these examples or if you are wondering if your item is covered under the Common Sense Guarantee, please reach out to us at blue@unitedbyblue.com.

Common Sense Guarantee FAQS

Are any bags not covered under the Common Sense Guarantee?

Common Sense Guarantee does not cover novelty items (such as the Cooler Backpack), kits, or small accessory items. Additionally, bags from The Impact Collection for Target are not covered under Common Sense Guarantee.

What happened to the ‘Lifetime Guarantee?

We've discovered that the term 'Lifetime' often leads to confusion and usually involves delving into the fine print for many companies. In our effort to be transparent and straightforward with our community, we chose to prioritize clarity. This meant eliminating the use of the word 'Lifetime' to avoid any misunderstandings.

What is ‘general wear and tear’?

General wear and tear describes the breakdown of materials that occurs naturally over time. Our Common Sense Guarantee does not cover damage from accidents, misuse, improper care, or alterations not approved by UBB.

What do I do if I signed up for a Lifetime Guarantee in the past?

Guess what? It's essentially the same thing as before but instead of filling out paper work, you can reach out to us by emailing blue@unitedbyblue.com and we will be happy to help you!

Do I need to register my bag to be eligible for Common Sense Guarantee?

Not anymore. :)

Can I have my bag repaired at the repair shop of my choice?

Yes! If the damage to your bag is covered under our Common Sense, we’re happy to reimburse the cost of repairing at a local shop in United By Blue store credit. Please reach out to us first before you get the item repaired.

Am I eligible if I live internationally?

Our Common Sense policy may vary country to country. Customers should still reach out if you believe there is a manufacturing defect. If you are an international customer and have reached out, we’ll be in touch to discuss options available for you.

Can you send me a replacement part?

If you're in need of a replacement part for your bag, please let us know by emailing blue@unitedbyblue.com. We're happy to see if the part you're looking for is available to us!

What if my bag seems less water resistant than when I bought it?

Our (R)evolutionâ„¢ bags are manufactured with a DWR coating to repel water and decrease dry times. Although the shell of our bags is inherently designed to keep water from reaching their interior, their DWR coating will naturally wear away over time or through the use of chemicals in washing machines. This is not considered a manufacturing issue as it is a normal process in the lifetime of the product. Please reach out to our Customer Experience team at blue@unitedbyblue.com so we can recommend a way to restore the finish.
