Weishample Hollow Hegins , PA
November 19, 2011

In the rural farm town of Hegins, about an hour northeast of our state capital, you would expect to find a thicket of trees, a calming meadow or family of squirrels alongside Deep Creek, not an estimated 125 tons of trash. Since this site was so large, we decided to tackle the trash in stages, starting with the obscene amount of tires at the site.

Anacostia Park Parking Lot "F" Washington, D.C., DC
October 8, 2011

Over a year and half, we've seen some unusual things at our cleanups, but cleaning up along the River Terrace Recreation Area in D.C. was unlike anything we have come across. Amongst the reeds of the marshlands that bordered the shores of the Anacostia were layers of food wrappers and thousands of plastic bottles. In total, we picked up 3,989 pounds of trash from the Anacostia River!

On October 7th, UBB hit a new milestone--our first international cleanup! When it comes to removing trash, United By Blue never takes a vacation. On a recent overseas trip, our Chief Trash Collector couldn't resist the urge to clean up a beach in Hualien, Taiwan. Hualien is home to beautiful scenery, where mountain cliffs run directly into the azure colored sea.  The ocean plays a big part of life in Hualien, its harbor is filled with lots of local and foreign fisherman.

We removed 144 pounds of trash during our last "Tuesday at The River" cleanup. Half of the trash we collected was plastic water bottles, which always has a home along the banks of the river.

UBB has had quite the busy summer! Since April, we've held 7 cleanups at Bartram's Garden and picked up 2,538 pounds of trash! We've worked with student groups, met some amazing community volunteers and even cleaned up after a hurricane and tropical storm.

Our "Bottle Beach" cleanup was an interesting cleanup to say the least. As far as beaches go, this was definitely the dirtiest beach we've cleaned. This was not the kind of beach where you want to lay out your beach towel or go for a romantic stroll alongside, it is primarily used by fisherman. One direction of the beach contained the usual trash suspects--plastic bags, plastic bottles, food wrappers and styrofoam containers, but as we walking the other way was a trip through time.

United By Blue teamed up with Pico’s Worldwide to clean up Bear Creek in Hawthorne Park in Medford, Oregon. In a few hours, Pico's Worldwide staff and  volunteers removed 246 pounds of litter from Bear Creek. Volunteers found a lot of plastic bottles and food wrappers, not to mention odd items like a football, a road cone, a few sleeping bags, some shoes and a Frankenstein comic book. Hawthorne Park and the Bear Creek Greenway, a 17-mile trail that runs through it, are frequented by cyclists and joggers wishing to enjoy the outdoors.

Bartram's Garden Philadelphia, PA
September 10, 2011

On September 10th, United By Blue and the Industrial Asset Management Council (IAMC) cleaned up one of our favorite locations, Bartram's Garden.  IAMC, a Georgia-based company, wanted to do more than just hold their Fall 2011 professional forum in our fair city, they wanted to give back to the Philadelphia community.  The day before their convention was dedicated to cleaning the Schuylkill, chowing down on cheesesteaks and helping out at PHS's Pop Up Garden

After this weekend's storm, we spent the week wondering what kind of presents Irene left us at Bartram's Garden. The Schuylkill was incredibly high and brought in boatloads of litter compared to our past Bartram's Garden cleanups.

In just two hours, we removed 292 recyclables and 128 pounds of trash from the Garden's banks. During the cleanup, we found a tricycle that was missing its front tire (is that still a tricycle or does that make it a bicycle?), a happy meal toy still in the wrapper, a little kid's hat and a very creepy missed connection "love letter".

100 Waterworks Drive, Anson B. Nixon Park Kennett Square, PA
August 13, 2011

United By Blue partnered with The Paper Market to clean up Red Clay Creek at Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square, PA. Last year, we removed 631 pounds from this beautiful suburban park and this year we picked up 732 pounds of trash. That's a total of 1,363 pounds in just under one year!

Our strangest trash award went a car's bumper that had a student parking sticker from 1968. The other strange trash contenders included 10 tires, hair curlers, a knife, a metal pole and pieces of glass that had melted and fused into balls (found near the crash).
