Massachusetts has its very own rock star and United By Blue is looking to host a cleanup at Plymouth Rock next spring. Plymouth, MA has been a popular tourist destination since 1620, when the Pilgrims first came over from England in the Mayflower. In 1774, using 20 oxen, townspeople attempted to move Plymouth Rock from the base of Cole’s Hill, but this multi-ton rock split in two.
In 1834, the top portion of the rock was moved from the Liberty pole to an enclosure in front of Pilgrim Hall Museum. After the Civil war, it was fused back together and the date “1620” was carved onto its granite face.
This symbol of freedom and courage can be found in Pilgrim Memorial State Park and receives nearly one million visitors a year. After the cleanup is over, volunteers can visit the Mayflower II, which is anchored in Plymouth’s vibrant downtown waterfront. Plymouth offers miles and beaches and is a popular spot for recreational boating, historical tours and dolphin and whale watching trips.
Plymouth is deeply rooted in its history with a cornucopia of museums and historical homes. But it still has plenty of inviting modern attractions like art hubs, a Zoo and Aquarium, wineries and plenty of dining and shopping destinations to discover. With your help, UBB can make this pilgrimage to host a beach cleanup at this historic site.
