United By Blue is Now a Certified B Corporation

For a company like UBB, measuring our good deeds against an industry standard hasn’t been possible until now. We’ve removed over 30,000 pounds of trash and have reached thousands of people and educated them on ocean issues through our online outreach. We’ve reduced the plastic packaging in our supply chain by 80% and are using only organic cotton to keep pesticides out of waterways.  But, at the end of the day, no single metric existed to encapsulate all the good we do at United By Blue both in the office and on the riverbanks. Until now.

scuba with dolphinI’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, and thinking about it will never get me to do it.  So I’ve decided to write it.

I want, I need, to scuba dive more.

Contrary to what it may seem, starting a company that conducts beach and waterway cleanups on a regular basis, I am not a beach-going type of person.  I have never really liked just laying out on a beach for hours on end listening to the surf and getting tan…in fact, I’m pretty pale and burn easily.

What I love about the ocean is what’s within it.

And the best way to see the beauty that is in the ocean is to scuba dive.

At first I was worried this would simply be a funny video about bottled water...but Colbert really puts how stupid our addiction to plastic is into context. Take a look and enjoy.

What Does United By Blue Mean?

A name can mean everything, and a name can mean nothing.

United By Blue is not the latter.

United By Blue's name conjures up feelings of unity and power.  It reminds us that we are all connected by the water that gives us life.  Without being united in the protection and admiration of the oceans we will lose them.  In fact, over the last 50 years, we have clogged our oceans with trash, killed over 90% of large fish, and done just about every other bad thing to them imaginable.  It is time we stopped treating our oceans this way and unite around a similar cause in protecting them.

Yes, United By Blue is a line of clothing and accessories, but it is so much more.

We all know by now what is means to "Go Green".

But something that the green movement misses is the importance of blue.  There is Green in Blue.

Blue is the new Green, and needs to be if we are going to see real environmental change happen. The ocea

ns are essential to life, and without the oceans, the green life that is found on land would not be possible.

Oceans clean our water, control our weather, produce more oxygen than all land plants combined, and provide more than 2 billion people with their main source of protein.

Plastic Kills Marine Life in Many Different Ways

Here is another stark reminder as to how plastic in our oceans can and is killing marine life.

Technology enables scuba divers to capture instances like this on video and show it to the world, however, just for a second imagine how large the oceans are and how many other sea creatures must be affected by marine debris on a daily basis - the figure would be staggering.
