Cleanup Recap: September Edition

Even though summer has come and gone, United By Blue has stood strong on the cleanup front. We kicked off September with a cleanup at Bartram's Garden on the 10th with visiting Industrial Asset Management Council group members. They flew in a day early for a company conference to spend the day doing community service projects around Philadelphia.

Despite the unusual high waters due to Hurricane Irene and a Tropical Storm Lee, IAMC’s dedicated volunteers removed 355 pounds from the high waters of the Schuylkill. Our weirdest trash included a fire extinguisher and half of a canoe. It’s too bad we didn’t have a full canoe, because sadly we watched many plastic bottles float downstream.

On the 17th, United By Blue conducted cleanups on both coasts! Our first cleanup took place at Gateway National Recreation Area beaches in Brooklyn. This was not the kind of beach where you want to lay out your beach towel or go for a romantic stroll alongside, it is primarily used by fisherman. The grand trash total was 2,637 pounds and our weird trash collection included a 50s action figure, a milk jug bitten by a shark, a light bulb, car motor, 24 tires, a stuffed bear with a hook in it, glass Clorox and Lysol jars and packet of ketchup from 2004.

The second cleanup took place in Hawthorne Park in Medford Park. Pico’s Worldwide lead a great cleanup and volunteers removed 246 pounds from Bear Creek.   Volunteers found a lot of plastic bottles and food wrappers, not to mention odd items like a football, a road cone, a few sleeping bags, some shoes and a Frankenstein comic book.

Our final Tuesday at The River took place on the 27th and produced 144 pounds of trash and 201 recyclables. Our weirdest trash included paint supplies, a kerosene tank and an ATV wheel. Over the course of 6 months and 7 cleanups, United By Blue has removed a total of 2,538 pounds of trash from the Schuylkill River at Bartram's Garden.

We’ve certainly had quite the busy month; in total, we have prevented 3,406 pounds of trash from entering our waterways and oceans in September. Stay tuned for our next Cleanup Recap at the beginning of November.
