Rainy weekends, tropical storms and dog days of summer slowed down our cleanup total for August. Even though we weren’t diving into waterways to remove trash, the majority of August was devoted to planning a few large scale cleanups for the fall months.
During our weekly staff cleanups, we decided to switch it up and headed over to Love Park in Center City on August 3rd. Our lunch break included picking up stray bottles, a bag of stuffed animals and a total of 20 pounds of trash from one of Philly’s popular landmarks.
On August 13th, we partnered with The Paper Marketand headed to Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square. Our committed volunteers pulled 631 pounds from Red Clay Creek and our weird trash collection includeda car's bumper (parts of its burnt out frame was in the creek) that had a student parking sticker from 1968, 10 tires, hair curlers, a knife, a metal pole and pieces of glass that had melted and fused into balls (found near the car wreckage). This was our Second Annual Red Clay Creek Cleanup and we removed 1,363 pounds in just under one year!

As we do every month, we ended our month on August 31st with a visit to the nation’s oldest botanical garden-Bartram’s Garden. In just two hours, we removed 292 recyclables and 128 pounds of trash from the Garden's banks. During the cleanup, we found a tricycle that was missing its front tire (is that still a tricycle or does that make it a bicycle?), a happy meal toy still in the wrapper, a little kid's hat and a very creepy missed connection "love letter". Our volunteers also did a bit of bird watching while we were there; they spotted a gaggle of turkeys and a beautiful hawk. We will be hosting our final Bartram's Garden cleanup of the season on September 27th.
In August, we picked up 779 pounds from local PA sites and we have removed 13,271 pounds since May! Head on over to our facebookto vote on the weirdest piece of trash we found this month and you can be eligible to win our Two Cent Tuesday contest. Stay tuned for the next Cleanup Recap at the beginning of October.
